Hitachi SV12SG Review by R. Boland
Perhaps Hitachi listens to its customers, because the Sanding Sheet Punch plate was included with mine, purchased from Amazon in Feb '07.
It is a nice random orbit sander and I like that it takes standard sanding sheets.
Hitachi SV12SG Review by M. Mclaughlin (Eureka, CA)
This is perhaps the most finish for fine woodwork and all other finishing work, of all the 1/4 sheet finish sanders I have ever used.
Far more vibration reduction and apparent speed than DeWalt and some others, for instance. A finish sander normally follows belt or other orbital sanders made for heavier material removal, and scratches are smaller for the grade of paper used. Higher amperage usually means ability to operate with greater pressure, but sanders are less useful for creating fine finishes when pressed down heavily, and sooner show age and damage should a heavy hand be used. Use appropriate tools rather than require one sander to do it all from heavy to refined removal. The DeWalt for instance at 2.4 amps does not remove material more quickly, although one guesses the amperage is intended for resistance to abusive use. If not abused, a sander is best judged by:
material removal, lack of transmitted vibration (this vibration means that power is used to jolt the user rather than sanding), finish obtained with whatever grade paper used. The Hitachi appears to be reliable, as I had many doors, frames, sills and other refinishing in the first week of use, along with some metal work. I expect it to be so, as Hitachi products tend to exceed the workman's standard, Makita in many areas, without some design drawbacks.
Except for this:
It does have a drawback of not actually using 1/4 sheet. This may be important to many. With proper tearing of the sheet, one gets 3 sheets and some extra.
While I only give it a 4 due to that hassle, there is no other finish sander I would own, and have retired or given away my others.
Hitachi SV12SG Review by Bic Ballpoint (Red Bluff, CA USA)
I bought the Hitachi SV12SG in March 2007. Contrary to the experience of several earlier reviewers, I received a sturdy metal punch plate. The good news: It sands. The bad news: 1/4 of a standard sheet of sandpaper will not quite reach the clamps. So, unless you plan to use adhesive-backed sandpaper, take a pass on this baby. Or, use my plan of using it in tandem with a Porter-Cable sander, which will handle the slightly undersized sheet that will be left after I cut an over-sized one for the Hitachi. Another fix might be to replace the pad with a thinner one, but that's a job for Hitachi, not the purchaser.
Other observations: The dust collection system works well, although the bag is pretty chintzy. The On/Off slide switch is well-positioned--but it doesn't have much of a surface to push on and mine is so stiff that it's difficult to work with the intended finger-flick; I have had to turn the running sander around and push the switch with my free hand. Perhaps the switch will loosen up with more use.
